About the Named Patient Program (NPP)
Certain life-saving medications that have been approved by regulatory authorities in the United States (FDA) or Europe (EMA) may not yet be commercially available in India. While these medicines cannot be sold locally, they can be critical for patients who have exhausted all approved treatment options. The Named Patient Program (NPP) is a compassionate access pathway that enables eligible patients to legally import such medications for personal use.
Under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, the Indian regulatory framework allows the import of unapproved drugs in limited quantities for individual patients, provided there is a valid medical need. Similar compassionate use mechanisms exist in many other countries as well.
